If you are planning on using the camper/kayak drop-off service, we recommend
that you spend the evening prior to your early morning departure in Bartlett
Cove, which is ten miles from Gustavus. This is because you will be spending
between 5:00 pm and 7:00 pm with the Glacier Bay Sea Kayaks staff, renting your
kayak(s), checking out your equipment, loading your empty kayak(s) on board the
Park tour vessel, and going over maps, tide tables and routes. The cost of taxi
vans back and forth between Bartlett Cove and the Gustavus inns and bed and
breakfasts can be prohibitive, and dinner facilities in Gustavus tend to close
early. The morning of your departure, you must be back at the Bartlett Cove dock
at 6:30 am to load your food and personal gear on board the boat.

Glacier Bay National Park Campground
The NPS campground in Bartlett
Cove is sometimes referred to as the "Hilton of all campgrounds." Below the lush
rainforest canopy the forest floor is covered in thick moss, ferns and berry
bushes. There are both large group camping areas and individual tent sites.
Firewood is provided for the wood stove in the "day use" shelter where campers
gather to read, visit, and frequently dry out equipment. There are ample latrine
facilities which are well maintained. Cooking sites are on the beach. Bear-proof
caches are stationed for convenient storage of food. The campground is located a
short walk from the NPS Visitor Information Station where wheelbarrows are
available to facilitate moving camping equipment between the campground and the
boat dock.
The campground is free and does not require advance reservations. Permits may
be obtained upon arrival at the Visitor Information Station. Shower and laundry
facilities are available at the Glacier Bay Lodge. Tokens may be purchased at
the front desk. Campers often prefer to enjoy the food and beverage services of
the Lodge as opposed to setting up their own cooking equipment.

Gustavus Inns and Beds and Breakfasts
For a perfect ending to your Glacier Bay kayak trip, why not relax in one of
the inns or B & B's in Gustavus. Spend an extra day! The community of Gustavus
offers a completely different experience to complement your camping trip in
Glacier Bay. A small, rural Alaska town, Gustavus offers many activities such as
bicycling, fishing, restaurants and a coffee shop, and boasts several art
galleries specializing in Alaska art and local crafts. Don't forget to visit the
library and local gas station/petroleum museum.

Pictured here is the Gustavus Inn, one of our favorites, which was the
original homestead inn when the town was first established.
Accommodations in Gustavus range from full service inns with gourmet meal
service to rustic cabins and bunk beds. For a complete listing of services,
check out the web sites below.
